Prospero Engineering have a new opportunity for a Sales Engineer to provide consultative solution based sales of pneumatic components and subsystems for industrial automation machinery. As a Sales Engineer you will need to have a technical or engineering background working closely with the customer to understand their requirements and selling the capability of the companies products and services.

Planning your own diary you are expected to set up meetings with existing customers and also identify new opportunities with other clients.

The ideal candidate for this role will have a background in mechanical engineering but have at least 2 years in a customer facing role, you will need to have excellent commercial acumen, customer service skills and influencing skills. You will be responsible for selling engineering capability, drafting a specification and liaising with the customer from start to finish. To build long standing relationships you will need to have a positive attitude and desire to meet and exceed sales targets.

Main Tasks:

  • With the Regional Sales Manager create strategic action plans in accordance with sales policies and targets
  • Produce, implement and maintain Area Plans ensuring that there are sufficient user accounts so that targets may be achieved from pre-planned target users
  • Ensure service expectations of Maintenance accounts are met, sales revenue and profitability is maximized and the contact network is maximized
  • Ensure all New Business accounts are aggressively pursued to increase market share at the expense of competitor business
  • Identify, qualify and develop new business users
  • Using Sales reports analyse User trends and take whatever corrective action is deemed necessary

Make profitable sales to customers through:

  • Learning the customer’s business needs
  • Selling value concepts
  • Building one-to-one relationships with target user contacts

Product promotion:

  • Learn the features, benefits, options and applications for all catalogue products
  • Promote New Products aggressively
  • Promote Simple, Engineered and Configured Special products aggressively
  • Actively participate in product campaigns and surveys as requested
  • Know the competition and report on their capability and activity within the sales area.
  • Maintain accurate, current and relevant records and submit reports in a timely manner
  • Maintain detailed records on the customer’s business & contact information within SMC’s CRM system
  • Submit call data for all customer-related activity on SUGAR after each call
  • Submit Enquiry activity within the CRM as generated and update on a monthly basis
  • Communicate all sales related instructions to Sales Management and Head Office via the correct process

As required:

  • Attend sales meetings and training sessions as required
  • Undertake any special projects that may be required

At all times:

  • Know and apply the company’s basic sales policies
  • Represent the company in a professional manner to customers
  • Act to maximize personal productivity and personal cost-effectiveness
  • Maintain sufficient contact with other members of the organization to ensure that good communications between customers and the Company are achieved

Essential Skills

  • Proven sales experience, constantly meeting or exceeding targets
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and influence, influence credibly and effectively at all levels of the business
  • Proven ability to drive the sales process from plan to close
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • PC Skills: Word, Excel, E-mail, Power Point
  • Full & Current Driving licence
  • Up to date passport
  • May be required to undertake nights away in the UK or Europe


Mechanical Engineer qualification/experience
